With the secondary air holes partially covered, you can put on the top. After a second, a strong draft should be established and you will feel air sucking in through the secondary air holes. A clean burn looks like this… like it’s not even lit. Adjust the amount of secondary air to keep the temperature up for the cleanest burn. Usually an excess of smoke means there’s too much fuel, and you need to add more secondary air.
