Biochar has been used as everything from a soil amendment to an animal feed supplement to a decontaminant–and this just scratches the surface. Join Kathleen Draper of the Ithika Institute for Carbon Intelligence and co-author of Burn: Using Fire to Cool the Earth, as she explores the uses and benefits of biochar carbon in building materials in this half-day hands-on workshop.

Based on many years work in carbon-negative construction, the presentation will explore the unique and positive properties of this biomass-based material in clays and lime mortars, cement, insulation, and as an additive for plasters and bricks. She will also provide insight into the incorporation of biochar to adsorb electromagnetic radiation from wireless technologies, mitigate odors and toxins in indoor environments, provide humidity control, and act as an integral and enduring carbon sink. Join us in the exploration of this ever-evolving technology!
