In 2015 the World Health Organization estimated that of the 2.1 billion people that do not have safe water at home, 159 million people still primarily drink water from surface sources such as streams and lakes. Access to clean drinking water amidst a changing climate is increasingly becoming one of our biggest social and political problems.

Join Biochar facility manager Dan Hettinger for an exploration of appropriate and affordable water filtration technologies. Learn where to apply various filtration methods to a wide range of biological and chemical contaminants. We’ll demonstrate how we can collect and process rainwater for potable use, build a simple sand and gravel filter, and share our experimental work with homestead activated carbon production.
